「昨日山中之木,以不材得终其天年;
For anyone who doesn’t read Chinese, here is the passage, from the chapter “The Mountain Tree” (山木) in the Zhuangzi:
Zhuangzi was walking in the mountains when he saw a great tree, thick with branches and leaves. A woodcutter stopped beside it but did not cut it. Asked why, he said: “It’s no use for anything.” Zhuangzi said: “Because it is useless, this tree will live out the years Heaven gave it.”
Leaving the mountains, the Master stayed with an old friend, who was delighted and told his servant to kill a goose and cook it. The servant asked: “One can cackle and one can’t. Which shall I kill?” The host said: “Kill the one that can’t.”
The next day a disciple asked: “Yesterday the tree lived out its years because it was useless. Today the goose died because it was useless. Master, where would you stand?”
The site stops at the question. In the book, Zhuangzi laughs and answers:
“I would stand somewhere between useful and useless. But that only looks like the answer, so it still won’t spare me trouble. It is different if you ride the Way and wander free: no praise, no blame, now a dragon, now a snake, changing with the times, never content to be only one thing.”
