2. How the 16,593 ETH is described. At the moment the site says it was raised “to buy the Clock NFT”, that the DAO “won the piece”, and that “proceeds were donated by Pak”. Each of those is true, but together they make it sound like the community went shopping for art. What people actually sent in 2022 was money for Julian’s defence, and the Clock auction was the way to do it. WikiLeaks announced it that way on the day the bid won: “all funds will go to aid the defense” (archived). I’d suggest the site tell it the same way, so the DAO’s own account matches the record. The changes are small:
Two small facts: WikiLeaks gave the figure as US$52.85m, not $55m. And on-chain, the Clock was listed on 5 February and the auction was finalised on 9 February 2022, when the Clock moved to the DAO Safe (tx), so “took place on 7 February” may need checking.

中文翻译。 我逐条校对了一遍，完整的校对稿在上面折叠的部分里。主要改动：solidarity 在这里应译为"声援"而不是"团结"；Treasury 译为"国库"即可；另外有几处直译读起来比较生硬。
关于 16,593 ETH 的表述。 现在网站写的是"筹款用于购买 Clock NFT"“赢得了这件作品”“所得由 Pak 捐赠”。每一句都没错，但合在一起，读起来像是社区去买了一件艺术品。2022 年大家转出的，其实是支持朱利安辩护的钱，竞拍 Clock 只是方式。出价胜出当天，WikiLeaks 也是这样宣布的：“全部资金将用于支持他的辩护”。建议网站也这样讲，让 DAO 自己的说法和当时的记录一致。具体改法见上面的英文部分，改动不大。
另外两个小事实：WikiLeaks 公布的金额是 5,285 万美元，不是 5,500 万。链上记录显示，Clock 于 2 月 5 日上架，拍卖在 2022 年 2 月 9 日完成，当天转入 DAO 的 Safe，所以"2 月 7 日举行"可能需要再核实一下。

The Ethereum address still has 3,681 ETH (~$9.2M). Julian Assange is free. Should we recover the leftover donated funds to return to donors, or use them for future DAO matters?

Regarding the discussion about the handling of the remaining 3,000+ ETH in the foundation, I’d like to share my personal thoughts. Since rescuing Mr. Assange, the foundation hasn’t touched the remaining ETH since September 2024; it’s been frozen. However, because the foundation is a custodian and not directly related to our Assange DAO, the only entities that can directly contact the foundation are Park and Mr. Assange. If we want to reactivate the foundation’s funds, only Park and Mr. Assange are the two main entities. Therefore, I suggest our community submit a proposal for a vote, authorizing Park or Mr. Assange to directly communicate with the German foundation, requesting the remaining funds to be returned to Park, who can then donate them back to our community. This would be a legal and reasonable procedure! After receiving the funds, our community can discuss allocating a portion to continue supporting Mr. Assange’s charitable work. The community went to great lengths to rescue Mr. Assange, and now that he is free, the remaining funds should be returned to the community, allowing it to continue its work.
That is an important topic that the community should discuss, somebody should make a different topic/proposal for it, I was not a part of the multisig during that time of the donation. I am merely trying to help out with the website development/design in this thread.
Yes, we should continue to stand up for justice, and use the recovered Ethereum to do more work in this area and grow the community. In this way, it will be more conducive for us to carry out more just actions in the future.
We all know that it’s difficult to achieve this goal legally. We hope to achieve it through a human/moral approach (preferred and most practically feasible).
The underlying public opinion in this matter is that the initial goal of the global crowdfunding campaign was solely to pay Assange’s defense fees and secure his release. Now that the goal has been achieved, the mission of this special donation has ended. Morally, the remaining funds should not remain permanently with the foundation. The Wau Holland Foundation is a non-profit organization that defends freedom of information; it needs to maintain its credibility within the cypherpunk and press freedom communities—this is its bargaining chip.
Complete practical steps:
The AssangeDAO community initiates a formal public proposal (Snapshot vote). The community vote authorizes the DAO multi-signature group, as the donor representative, to begin formal dialogue with the foundation’s board of directors. This step demonstrates to the foundation that the demands are not the opinion of a few, but a consensus of the entire donor community.
Draft a public, moderate yet powerful formal letter to the foundation, with core arguments (human touch + morality + transparency):
◦ Source of Funds: This ETH came from crowdfunding by thousands of ordinary people worldwide. All donors donated solely for Assange’s legal defense.
◦ Facts: Assange has been released, the defense project is complete, and the original purpose of the donation has been achieved.
◦ Request: We hope the foundation will respect the wishes of the original donors and return the remaining ETH to AssangeDAO.
◦ Attached Concessions (Negotiation Bargaining, Very Crucial): DAO promises that if the funds are returned, the community can vote to retain a portion for continued use in press freedom and whistleblower protection, not demanding a 100% refund, thus reducing the foundation’s resistance.
3. Pak, as an original donor, should also speak out to support the effort. During the initial planning stages, was there a donation agreement between Pak and the foundation, such as a written agreement regarding the handling of remaining funds after the designated purpose was fulfilled? Meanwhile, Pak is the donor on the donation contract. Assange’s proposal to vote, which authorized Pak to send a letter to the German foundation expressing his desire for the return of the project’s surplus, would significantly increase his negotiating weight.
